October 2008 Newsletter
My head is still in the clouds from a dreamy
stay at Basin Harbor Club (www.basinharbor.com)
last week. The second annual Garden Party was great fun and attendance
almost doubled. Forty-six participants enjoyed glorious weather, gourmet
food, and info-packed lectures at this historic resort on Lake
Champlain. I had the honor of staying in the Honeymoon suite. This
luxurious accommodation had a living room; kitchenette; king bed with a
canopy; fireplace, and a Jacuzzi. Wouldn't you know it that Sergio
couldn't join me due to work commitments. I 'forced' myself to enjoy it
without him. This grand resort will close for the winter on October 19th
and reopen next spring. You really owe it to yourself to experience this
magical place. Make plans to go on your own or join me at the 2009
Garden Party scheduled for September 20 & 21.
In this newsletter: Great Gardens and Landscaping Symposium; NEW
Pre-Symposium workshop; Evan's NEW fundraiser featuring collectible

Cheap' sale from Mariaville Peat Company; I'm on SafeLawns and
Landscapes radio show October 2; November 8th gardening program at The
Glen Sanders Mansion; SafeLawns & Landscapes organic landscaping

Sponsored by Bobbex (www.bobbex.com),
Bradfield Organics (www.bradfieldorganics.com
), Gardener's Supply Company (www.gardeners.com),
Proven Winners (www.provenwinners.com),
People, Places & Plants (www.ppplants.com),
and SafeLawns & Landscapes (www.safelawns.net)
NEW:
As announced in my last newsletter, the
sixth annual Great Gardens and Landscaping Symposium will be Friday
evening and Saturday, April 24 & 25, 2009 at the four-diamond,
world-class Mirror Lake Inn and Resort (www.mirrorlakeinn.com
) in Lake Placid. The symposium features renowned speakers; elegant
accommodations; gourmet food (The View Restaurant has been awarded the
2008 Four Diamond Award from AAA. Only 3 percent of the nearly 28,000
restaurants approved by AAA achieve this prestigious distinction);
extensive handouts; garden gifts; door prizes and more. It is sure to
sell-out as it did when the Inn hosted the symposium in 2007.
The sixth annual symposium kicks off Friday, April 24th with a 6:00 p.m.
welcome reception followed by a 7:00 p.m. talk by Tara Dillard,
nationally award-winning author. She will present Lessons Learned from a
Garden Tour of France and England. Saturday's programming runs from 9:00
a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and includes lunch. Space is limited to 150 attendees
(100 less than in 2008 which also sold out). For more about the
speakers, topics, and agenda, please visit www.pyours.com/Symposium2009.html
. Special symposium packages are provided below.
One night packages for the Great Gardens and Landscaping Symposium
include Friday night accommodations in a Noonmark room; Friday welcome
reception and cash bar; full breakfast and lunch on Saturday;
refreshment break; five lectures, symposium handouts, garden gift, and
door prizes. The rates are $344 for a single or $488 for a double
($244 per person). Two night packages are $556 for a single or
$716 for a double ($358 per person) and include all of the above plus
Saturday night accommodations and Sunday breakfast. Taxes and gratuity
are additional. These packages are outstanding, especially when you
consider that a room alone at this prestigious resort is usually over
$300 a night (not including tax and gratuity). To make your
reservations, or to give it as a gift to one of your special friends or
family members, please call the Mirror Lake Inn and Resort at (518)
523-2544 and request the Great Gardens package. Space is limited. So
please register now!
PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP
NEW for 2009 will be a Pre-Symposium Workshop on Friday morning,
April 24th. The fun starts Thursday, April 23 at 7:00 p.m. where
participants have the option of joining symposium speakers Tara Dillard,
Paul Tukey, and myself for casual conversation and drinks at the Inn
followed by dinner. Friday morning will be interactive talks and
roundtables from 9:00 a.m. - noon. Tara, Paul and I will be sharing some
additional landscape, design, and organic lawn care tips with a smaller
number of participants, allowing for one-on-one time to address
questions and provide more individualized solutions. Space is
limited to 50 attendees.
The Pre-Symposium package is $245 for a single and $315 for a double
($157.50 per person). This includes Thursday's accommodations in a
Noonmark room; Friday's breakfast, the pre-symposium lectures and

reserve.
THANK YOU TO OUR SYMPOSIUM SPONSORS!
Please support the following companies that are helping to underwrite
this event:
BOBBEX (www.bobbex.com) is
one incredible company offering organic products that keep Bambi and
friends at bay. BOBBEX is a family owned and operated company that has
sold environmentally friendly products since 1989. Bob Ecsedy founded
BOBBEX to help homeowners plagued by deer. Nurserymen, master gardeners,
and thousands of homeowners rely upon BOBBEX to protect their landscapes
and plantings from hungry deer. BOBBEX repels through both odor and
taste by using meat meal, fish oil, putrescent eggs, garlic and other
naturally occurring ingredients to deter deer from browsing. The company
also sells BOBBEX-R that protects plants from rabbits, chipmunks, voles,
squirrels and groundhogs. Other products include one that dissuades
horses from cribbing and another that keeps geese off lawns while at the
same time adding important trace elements. For more about their product
line and application instructions, visit their web site or call (800)
792-4449.

is an outstanding magazine. As you know from my newsletters, I am a HUGE
FAN of this magazine that features great plants for the northeast,
organic practices, and community centered articles and events. Paul
Tukey is the brainchild and editor of this publication that emphasizes
an organic approach to our lawn and gardens. His book, The Organic Lawn

EVAN'S NEWEST FUNDRAISER - ENCHANTING
CREATIONS IN WOOD
Wait until you visit my new web page that features Evan's newest
fundraiser for his hopeful participation in the 2009 National Youth
Leadership Forum on Law and Criminal Scene Investigation in Washington,
D.C. The National Youth Leadership Forum is related to the Junior
National Young Leaders Conference that he attended the summer of 2007.
This fundraiser is the classiest yet. Evan is selling woodturning
created by John J. Smith, a talented general contractor that has become
a budding artist. These art pieces are stunningly beautiful. They're
created from different woods and then masterfully sculptured into bowls
and other art forms. One of these pieces would make a very special
addition to your home as well as a great holiday gift. To see the first
collection being offered, pricing, and for purchasing information,
please click on www.pyours.com/gardenofferings2.html
.
IF YOU PLANT IT, THEY WILL COME
Bambi and the gang are in the bushes, just waiting for dusk to arrive so
they can boldly walk on your property and 'prune' your plants with glee.
Give yourself a fighting chance with Evan's book sale that once again
raises money for the National Youth Leadership Forum next year. Creating
a Deer Proof Garden provides tips for outwitting deer plus 117 deer
proof and deer resistant plants. He is selling this 143 page soft cover
book for $21.50, including sales tax (it retails for $39.95). We can
make arrangements for you to pick the book up at our house in Ballston
Spa or mail it for an additional $3.50. Just let us know your preference
by emailing pyours@nycap.rr.com
or calling (518) 885-3471.

family business, since I started Perennially Yours in the late 80's. His
company offers a number of different soil blends as well as a great cow
manure compost. Mariaville Peat is having a 'Dirt Cheap' sale featuring
10% off their regular prices. Yahoo! This is a great time for prepping
new beds or topdressing existing gardens with the compost. To place your
order and arrange a delivery time, call John at (518) 864-5380. He is

KERRY'S ON THE OCTOBER 2 SAFELAWNS RADIO
SHOW AND SAFELAWNS ORGANIC LAWN AND
GARDEN TIPS
Please plan to join me and my SafeLawns colleague, Scott Reill, this
Thursday, October 2 from 8:00 - 9:00 p.m. (EST) when we fill in for Paul
Tukey, the radio's host, while he heads to Columbus, Ohio to present the
SafeLawns Award for the city deemed to have the most environmentally
friendly landscape in the U.S. The show will be a lot of fun - and even more fun -
if you call in with your questions at 1-888-378-5463. You can also
email your questions ahead of time to Paul@SafeLawns.org.
Listen to the show at www.safelawns.net
and click on radio show.
Gardening alert! Fall is a time when gardeners tend to put
watering their gardens and lawns on the back burner. Unfortunately this
can stress plants so they're more susceptible to damage and winter kill.
Check out SafeLawns.org's watering tips at http://www.safelawns.org/tips/watering.cfm
. Also learn how to control grubs by listening to SafeLawns' most recent
radio broadcast recorded at http://www.penguinpods.com/safeLawns/SafeLawnsRadio.html.
ADIRONDACK CHAIR AND ANTIQUE CART FOR SALE
My husband has put his foot down and insists I cannot keep my yellow
Adirondack chair that I bought to support the Ballston Spa Business and
Professional Association. I'm not going to argue I know who has the
bigger foot. It is a nice rocker chair with a curved seat and back. I
bought it for $100 earlier this spring. I am selling it for $50. It
needs a fresh coat of paint (you pick the color). I am also selling the
white antique-looking cart that has been on our front porch for years.
Sergio says TOO MANY years. It needs some loving care but it is special.
I am selling this for $25. Email me at pyours@nycap.rr.com
if you are interested.
EVAN AND MOM'S CORNER
Last month was a sobering time for our family. Evan was diagnosed with a
stress fracture to his lower back, most likely caused by a hard hit
while playing keeper during a soccer scrimmage. The diagnosis came the
second week of September. He had played only two games for the school's
JV soccer team and was promptly pulled for the rest of the season. He
was fitted for a back brace and will have another MRI in late October to
see if he can resume sports and other activities. I must say Evan is
handling this far better than Sergio and I. He is very optimistic and
upbeat. Evan still goes to soccer practices every day as well as games
to cheer his teammates on. He is truly a role model and inspiration to
Sergio and me. Hopefully Evan will be back at full speed next month, the
Good Lord willing. Isn't it interesting that I wrote about Evan's new
braces (on his teeth) in my September newsletter, and now I am writing
about braces again.... Until my next newsletter, enjoy this
beautiful fall weather.
Perennially Yours,
Kerry A. Mendez
